Independent Energy Solutions “Powers Up” New US Marine Corps Solar Project in 29 Palms

Vista, CA – July 26, 2011 – Independent Energy Solutions, Inc. (IES), a leading solar energy development and construction firm, today announced completion and “powering-up” of a 213 kW (dc) solar electric (photovoltaic) carport / shade structure installation at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in 29 Palms, California. The large-scale system is capable of generating about 312,000 kilowatt-hours of clean, green electricity annually while providing shade and cover for parked cars.

Designed and built by IES for the US Navy and GKK Works, the project consists of 868 Solarworld solar modules, two PV Powered inverters and an integrated mounting system for an existing carport structure. It produces the equivalent electricity to power 28 average single-family homes and will offset about 405,000 pounds of greenhouse gases annually – the environmental equivalent of taking 52 cars off the road.

According to IES Vice President of Business Development, George Gisel, “This project was uniquely challenging due to the advanced logistics and coordination required for construction at an active Air Ground Combat Center. IES was chosen by GKK Works in large part because of our extensive military project experience and ability to deliver systems on-time and on-budget.”

“Mission Accomplished” as Independent Energy Solutions Completes Key US Military Solar Project

San Diego, CA – June 21, 2011 – Independent Energy Solutions, Inc. (IES), a leading solar energy development and construction firm, today announced completion of a 936 kW (dc) solar electric (photovoltaic) carport / shade structure installation at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. The utility scale system, located at Pendleton’s new Bachelor Enlisted Quarters (BEQ6), is capable of generating about 1.3 million kilowatt-hours of clean, green electricity annually while providing shade and cover for parked cars.

The finished project, designed and built by IES for the US Navy and Harper Construction, consists of 15 custom steel shade canopies, 4352 Kyocera solar modules, 4 Satcon inverters and a customized racking system. It produces the equivalent power to 120 average single-family homes and will offset about 860 tons of greenhouse gases annually – the environmental equivalent of taking 215 cars off the road.

According to IES President and CEO, Linda Strand, “IES has been working with the United States military on a wide range of solar projects for the past decade – everything from high-tech experimental systems to large-scale generation plants such as this. As a woman-owned business, we are so pleased the military and our contracting partners like Harper Construction continue to take advantage of our ability to deliver and self-perform a quality product on-time and on-budget.”

Independent Energy Solutions Completes Major Solar Electric Project for County of San Diego

San Diego – May 5, 2011 – Independent Energy Solutions, Inc. (IES), a leading solar energy development and construction firm, today announced completion of a 358 kW solar electric (photovoltaic) shade structure installation for the County of San Diego. The system, owned by San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) and installed on the County’s new Operations Center parking facility, is capable of generating nearly 650,000 kilowatt-hours of clean, green electricity annually while providing cover for parked cars. The energy benefits the surrounding community and is now the largest solar energy structure on County property.

The system, designed and built by IES, consists of 24 custom steel shade canopies, 1932 Kyocera solar modules, an inverter and a customized racking system. It produces enough power for 107 average single-family homes in San Diego County and will offset about 376 tons of greenhouse gases annually – equivalent to not driving 1 million miles.

According to County Board of Supervisors Chairman Ron Roberts, “This project is an excellent example of how the County finds creative opportunities to incorporate green building and energy efficiency into our work. Projects like this make both environmental and financial sense.”

SDG&E oversaw and funded the system’s construction, and has a 10-year lease agreement for the solar facility on the County’s new parking garage.

IES Receives WBE Certification from CPUC

Vista, CA - January 12, 2011 - Independent Energy Solutions, Inc. (IES), a leading solar energy development and construction firm, announced it has been formally certified by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) as a Woman-Owned Business Enterprise (WBE).

The certification (VON 10090051), issued by the CPUC's Supplier Clearinghouse, is designed to help regulated public utilities meet California market procurement goals for women (5%), minorities (15%) and service-disabled veterans (1.5%). IES will now be in the CPUC's central database of suppliers and will be part of an early notification system for new projects.

Linda Strand, IES president and founder, said, "While IES has been self-certified as a woman-owned small business enterprise for some time, formal recognition by the CPUC will create new opportunities for us through faster contracting and greater visibility to potential customers. Now, IES can help utilities reach both their renewable energy portfolio standards and their procurement goals."

IES Completes 1.15 Megawatt Solar Electric System for The Capital Group Companies

Installation now the largest in Orange County, California

Irvine, CA – October 5, 2010 – Independent Energy Solutions, Inc. (IES), based in Vista, California, today announced the completion and commissioning of a 1.15 MW solar electric (photovoltaic) system for The Capital Group Companies (Irvine Campus). Mounted on shade structures on the roofs of three parking garages, the system provides nearly 50% of the energy used to power the campus data center and central plant equipment.

The Capital Group Companies Irvine Campus - Solar

Consisting of 5,472 Kyocera 210 watt high-efficiency polycrystalline solar panels and capable of producing 1.7 million kilowatt hours of clean electricity per year, the array is now the largest photovoltaic system in Orange County. It will save approximately 30,725 tons of CO2 emissions over the next 25 years compared to conventional power generation -- the equivalent of 3.8 million automobile miles not driven.

The Capital Group strives to provide an environmentally conscious work environment. This commitment, combined with the anticipated energy savings and available tax incentives, drove the organization to invest in solar energy.

"Our Irvine Campus proved to be an ideal location for this type of solar implementation. The existing parking shade structures provided the significant square footage required for economies of scale and a financially viable system. The combination of system capacity, tax incentives and timely rebate structures, make this PV system very cost effective over the long term," said Reid McCartney, vice president of Corporate Facilities for the Capital Group.

"IES's ability to install over 5,400 panels in seventeen working days was particularly effective in minimizing disruptions at our fully occupied campus, which our Irvine associates continue to recognize and appreciate,” continued McCartney.

IES chief operating officer, George Gisel, noted, "This project shows that, even during a recession, companies like the Capital Group can 'go solar' because the investment payback periods are shorter than ever. In this case, the Capital Group should see a full payback in five years and the system will save them $14 million in energy costs over 25 years. Solar projects like this make economic sense and promote the importance of sustainability and corporate citizenship."

The Capital Group Companies is a global, investment management firm serving individuals, families, corporations, governments and non-profit organizations. Founded in 1931, the Capital Group is the home of American Funds, one of the three largest mutual fund families in the United States. The organization employs nearly 7,500 associates in 22 offices.
